The Automatic Air Vent is a pressure safety mechanism used to allow unwanted air be released out of the system. The air vent is automatic as it shuts itself off when water comes into the system. The device works using a small floatation device which is found within the Automatic Air Vent and as water comes through, the float lifts up and shuts off the valve. This will then stay shut until the level of the water subsides making the float drop with it, the vent will then reopen.
