A condensate trap, also known as the syphon, is used to collect the moisture from the condensed gases in the appliance, this should be emptied during servicing intervals. The condensate trap is installed in the gas line near the shut off valve. When the air is cooled, it can't hold as much moisture, so it condensates or collects on the evaporator coils and drips to a shallow pan. There is a drain on this pan that takes the water away from the unit. The trap will most likely be made of plastic and will usually come as a trap kit which includes a tube & washers.
