A flow switch is a mechanical switch that is switched on or off in response to the flow or non-flow of air or water. It typically operates through the use of a paddle which gets displaced due to the force of fluid or air moving past it. When the switch senses the flow of air or water if will send a signal to other devices in the system, such as the pump. The flow switch can indicate to the pump to switch on or off. A flow switch might be used to protect a central heating element from being energized before the airflow from the blower is established. Flow switches are also used as a safety parameter and will usually have some way of telling the PCB to stop all processes if a fatal flaw is detected during operation.
