Heat exchangers can be split into two categories, primary and secondary. The primary is present in most boilers and is sometimes referred to as the main heat exchanger or heat engine. The secondary heat exchanger is only present in combi boilers and is sometimes referred to as a plate heat exchanger or hot water exchanger. The primary heat exchanger allows the transfer of heat from the burner to the water in the system. The secondary heat exchanger allows heat to be transferred between one closed system and another .
