Heat exchangers can be split into two types, primary and secondary. The primary is present in almost all boilers and can sometimes be called the main heat exchanger or heat engine. The secondary heat exchanger only appears in combi boilers and can also be known as a plate heat exchanger or hot water heat exchanger. The primary heat exchanger is used to transfer heat from the burner to the water in the system. The secondary heat exchanger is used to transfer heat between two closed systems .
