There are two different types of electrode, the flame sensing electrodes and the ignition electrodes. The ignition electrode is responsible for causing a spark that starts off combustion. The flame sensing electrodes are responsible for detecting whether there is a flame in the burner, this is an important safety device designed to stop the fuel if the flame is not lit .
