The pressure relief valve, sometimes called safety valve, relief valve or the PRV is used to reduce the pressure in a system. It is set to open when the system pressure goes above a certain point to prevent the system from getting damaged . Each PRV has a set "bar", when the pressure within the system exceeds the bar the prv opens to allow water to escape which reduces the amount of pressure within the system .
