Heat exchangers can be split into two types, primary and secondary. The primary is installed on almost all boilers and can sometimes be referred to as the main heat exchanger or heat engine. The secondary heat exchanger is only found in combi boilers and is sometimes referred to as a plate heat exchanger or hot water exchanger. The primary heat exchanger allows the transfer of heat from the burner to the water in the system. The secondary heat exchanger allows heat to be transferred between one closed system and another .
